How many cameras do I need and how many days of recording is normal?
The number of cameras depends on the entrances, not the floor area. Every entrance, till and passage should be clearly visible. For a small shop, a camera at the entrance, one above the till and one overview camera are usually enough; for a house — the entrance, the garden and the parking area.
How many days of recording you need depends on the purpose: for homes and shops, the usual practice is several weeks of recordings, so that you have time to notice a problem. More days mean a larger drive in the recorder. NodePoint calculates the capacity from the number of cameras, the resolution and whether recording is motion-triggered or continuous.
If the cameras record people (staff, customers), the GDPR applies: you need an information sign, a clear purpose and a defined retention period for recordings. At installation, NodePoint provides a template "CCTV in operation" sign and a short GDPR notice for you to adapt to your premises.
Which is better — Wi-Fi or wired cameras?
For a permanent site, wired (PoE) cameras are more reliable: one cable carries both power and data, there are no drop-outs from Wi-Fi interference and recording does not depend on the router. Wi-Fi cameras are convenient where a cable cannot be run, or for temporary monitoring. NodePoint recommends cabling wherever possible.
Access control systems
NodePoint supplies and installs access control systems — card and fob readers, keypads, electric locks and video intercoms — and connects them to the CCTV and the network. You know who entered and when, and a former employee's access is revoked with a single action, without changing locks. Access control is also one of the measures required by the Bulgarian Cybersecurity Act (Art. 22(2), item 9) for companies within its scope.
Office networks and structured cabling
NodePoint builds local area networks (LAN) for offices and sites in Burgas: structured cabling, wall sockets, a network rack, patch panel, switches and router. A good network is orderly — every cable is labelled, and the diagram is handed over to the owner so that any future technician can maintain it.
The network is segmented logically (VLANs): staff computers, cameras, guests and devices (printers, IoT). That way, if a guest device or an old camera is compromised, the attacker cannot reach the accounts department.
Wi-Fi for offices, hotels and restaurants
Stable Wi-Fi comes from several access points on a single network, not from a more powerful router. NodePoint chooses access point locations based on the walls and the number of users, sets up roaming between them and a separate guest network with limited access. For hotels and guest houses — coverage in every room and a separate network for staff.
Wi-Fi does not reach every room? Book a free site survey — we will tell you how many access points you need. Call WhatsApp (opens in a new window)
How do I protect my cameras from being hacked?
Cameras are protected with four measures: changing the default password, keeping the firmware updated, putting the cameras on a separate network, and allowing remote access only through a secure connection rather than directly opened ports. Most hacked cameras on the internet still have their factory password or outdated firmware.
NodePoint applies these measures at every installation and can check an existing system. CCTV is part of a company's cybersecurity — more in cybersecurity and NIS2 for companies.
If a camera recording needs to be used as evidence, see technical analysis of video recordings.
What does the price of a CCTV system depend on?
The price of a CCTV system depends on five things: the number and type of cameras, the recorder and drive capacity (days of recording), the length and difficulty of the cabling, the height and accessibility of the mounting points, and whether network equipment is needed. Equipment prices change often, so NodePoint does not publish a price list; instead, we give you a written quote after a free site survey.
Frequently asked questions about CCTV and networks
Can I view the cameras from my phone?
Yes, NodePoint sets up phone access to the cameras with every installation. You can watch live, review recordings and receive motion alerts. Access goes through a secure connection, without ports opened directly to the internet.
How long does a camera installation take?
Installing a few cameras in a home or small shop usually takes one working day; larger sites take longer. NodePoint states the exact timeframe in the quote after the survey, because it depends mainly on the cabling.
Is it legal to have cameras in my shop or office in Bulgaria?
Yes, if you comply with the GDPR. You need an information sign at the entrance, a legitimate purpose (for example protecting property), a defined retention period for recordings, and cameras that do not capture more than necessary — for example not toilets and not other people's property. If you have staff, they must be informed as well.
Can I use my existing cameras?
Often, yes. NodePoint checks whether the cameras and recorder are still supported, whether the firmware can be updated and whether the image quality is good enough. Outdated cameras without updates are safer to replace, because they are an easy target for attacks.
What happens if the power or the internet goes down?
Without power, the cameras stop unless there is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Without internet, recording continues locally on the recorder — only phone access is lost. For shops and offices, NodePoint recommends a UPS for the recorder and the network equipment.
Do you supply the cameras, or do I need to buy them myself?
NodePoint supplies the equipment — cameras, recorders, network equipment and UPS units — through the official importers of brands such as Dahua, Hikvision, Imou, MikroTik, Ubiquiti and TP-Link, with the manufacturer's warranty. If you have already bought equipment, we check whether it is suitable and install it.
Do you provide a "CCTV in operation" sign?
Yes, at installation NodePoint provides a template "CCTV in operation" sign and a short GDPR notice — covering the purpose of the monitoring, the retention period for recordings and who has access to them. The notice is a template for you to adapt to your premises; it is not legal advice.
How many Wi-Fi access points does my office need?
It depends on the area, the walls and the number of users, not just the floor space. One access point rarely covers more than a few neighbouring rooms through concrete walls. NodePoint determines the number and positions during the survey.
Can you install the network and cameras in a new building before the renovation?
Yes, and that is the best time to do it. Cables are laid before plastering, and the points for cameras, Wi-Fi and sockets are planned together. Contact NodePoint once you have a floor plan.
